Why use a Master Builder?
If you’re looking for a master builder in Southampton, Portsmouth or the surrounding areas, you’ve come to the right place.
Stubbs Homes is proud to be a member of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB). It’s an organisation that’s helping to promote quality and standards across the building and construction industry. In this blog you’ll find out how we became a member and why we think you should always choose a master builder when planning building work at your home.
Why did we join?
Professional builders join the FMB to demonstrate their commitment to quality and high standards. As a design and build contractor specialising in home extensions, we understand how important it is for customers to have confidence in our abilities. Membership of the FMB includes user generated independent reviews from our customers and, of course, a thorough application process and assessment of our capabilities.
Director Tom Stubbs explains further, “Unfortunately, the building industry is largely unregulated and customers may find it difficult to find reputable and reliable builders to undertake projects. We’ve probably all heard of horror stories where people have either been left in the lurch during a project or had substandard work undertaken. It can be stressful, costly and also affects the reputation of the industry as a whole.
The lack of regulation and standards is an area that causes lots of frustration for professional builders like ours, so we were delighted to hear how the Federation of Master Builders promotes the building standards of its members. It’s a mark of quality and assurance to help home owners find the right builder for their needs.”

An accreditation based on rigorous vetting
Membership of the FMB is only available to businesses that have been trading for at least 12 months and to receive the accreditation we had to pass a number of stages. Firstly, during the application process, we were vetted via a wide range of checks including our trading and credit history, director checks, and insurance.
We were then independently assessed at one of our projects. This in-depth inspection of our work confirmed it met the high standards required for membership.
Trustmark – Government endorsed quality scheme
To further demonstrate our focus on quality and standards, Stubbs Homes is also endorsed by Trustmark. This is the only government endorsed quality scheme for work carried out around the home. As a registered member of the scheme, we are required to adhere to high standards of technical competence, customer service and trading practices.

Concluding Tom said, “If you want a reputable builder for your home, I highly recommend reviewing the Federation of Master Builder website. Knowing members have had to go through a detailed vetting process gives you peace of mind and it’s also a great opportunity to view the type of work they specialise in. However, I’d also recommend doing further research too – look at reviews and ask for references, view their website and see examples of their work, and also ask for a consultation. This way you’ll be able to develop a relationship with your builder and understand whether they are the right fit for your project.”
