Stubbs Homes Supports FMB Licence to Build Campaign
As a member of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), we were really pleased to hear about their ‘Licence to Build Campaign’ as we’re a firm believer that the construction industry should be more regulated to prevent rogue traders.
Did you know that anyone can legally carry out construction work on your home regardless of their training, skill or experience? They may not even have insurance to cover any compensation or damage caused. It’s a scary thought and one that can have consequences to your safety, rectification costs and your home’s resale ability.
The campaign is not just about adding more red tape; it’s focused on ensuring minimum professional standards are met before builders start work on a project. The FMB are calling for a national licensing scheme to protect home owners from poor workmanship and ensure a safer and higher quality built environment for everyone.
The licensing scheme would cover four main areas:
Health and Safety
Competence
Quality Management
Disputes
Unfortunately, the lack of licensing also affects reputable builders like us, as ‘cowboys’ have damaged the professionalism of the building trade. That’s why we voluntarily became accredited with the FMB as they already put in stringent checks for their members to help home owners select builders that have met the organisation’s standards.
When working with Stubbs Homes you can be assured that we adhere to strict standards and have full control over our project management so that every build we do fully meets building regulations and has safety and quality at the forefront.
We’re not alone in calling for more formalised standards for the construction industry. Research from the HomeOwners Alliance showed that 81% of homeowners support licencing and 86% of FMB members do too. There is also a common misconception that builders already have to be licensed with almost half of those surveyed thinking a mandatory scheme was already in place. So, this can put people at more risk when selecting a builder to work on their home.
Much of the construction industry is already regulated, such as architects and surveyors, and we fully support the FMB’s campaign calling for mandatory licensing for builders.
